Some essential “Do’s” and “Don’ts” about mooring rope and mooring works

Author : Date : 10/26/2014 11:55:51 PM
Rope can be divided into two main groups – laid and braided. Braided or three-stranded ropes are most common on leisure boats, although four-stranded ropes do exist. Braided ropes have a core at the centre that carries the load. The rope has an outer cover or sheath to protect the core and make the rope easier to grip. Here are some advice about rope and some tips during mooring operation:

1. Never subject the rope to a load greater than 50% of its maximum load. Always coil laid rope in the right direction, i.e. “right-laid” clockwise.
3. Modern ropes can be washed in a washing machine at 40°C. It does no harm to do so once a year.

4. Always whip the ends of the ropes. Don’t forget the mooring ropes and the dinghy tow rope.

5. Take along a couple of lengths of plastic hose, about 20-40 cm long or buy a Ropesaver that you can protect your mooring ropes with.

6. Always use a mooring damper on your mooring ropes (e.g. A rubber compensator or a Mooring Star steel spring (noise free).

7. Coiled laid rope must always hang free or be laid in a well ventilated area.

8. Do not drag ropes over sharp or rough edges or over surfaces where sharp abrading particles can penetrate between strands and yarns.

9. Avoid unnecessary chafing over fairleads, over bulwarks, taffrails etc.

10. All metal parts should be smooth and chafing points on ropes protected by leather, plastic or canvas parceling or worming with small sized ropes.

11. Winch drums must be smooth and free of rust or paint.

12. Fairleads should be in similar condition and if of the roller type should be free running and the bearings well greased.

13. Avoid contamination by chemicals or fumes. If contamination is suspected, wash man-made fiber ropes in cold running water, e.g. by hosing.

14. Avoid exposure to all forms of heat. Avoid unnecessary exposure to the degrading influence of strong sunlight.

15. When joining wire and fiber ropes, e.g. in towing systems, use a fairlead fitting to protect the eye of the fiber rope from cutting by the smaller diameter wire rope.

16. Avoid build up of excessive turn on ropes. If this condition has occurred loops will form and if loaded, strand distortion and loss of strength will result. Work excessive twist over end of rope before straining.

17. Never couple a left hand laid rope to a right hand laid rope no matter what materials are used.

18. If the rope is on a reel, mount the reel on trestles by placing a steel bar or tube through the centre bore and unreel with rope coming from underneath the reel.
