Pneumatic Rubber Fenders have been in use for around 50 years. It is the leading anti-collision device for marine application in the world. This compressed air filled rubber fender is used as a protective medium for ship-to-ship contact (STS), ship to quay (STQ) and ship-to-berthing (STB).
Pneumatic Rubber Fender can be delivered in various sizes and types. Chain and tyre net (CTN) type is usually recommended to protect the pneumatic rubber fender body, but sling type or body only is also available.
Pneumatic Rubber Fender Performance
The guaranteed energy absorption of Pneumatic Rubber fenders are the energy absorption at 60% deflection. This value can be use in engineering design and actual operation. Table gives the sizes, weights and technical performance of floating-type Pneumatic rubber fenders.

1 Energy represents s the Guarantee energy absorption at 60% deflection.
2 The weight is fender’s body weight without protective net may vary ± 10%
3 Reaction Force, R ± 10%; Deflection: ± 5% and each of the reaction force and energy absorptionare measured under static condition.
4 Special Sizes of others dimension are available upon request.
Four large-size PneumaticRubber Fenders are usually floated at the water line as primary fenders to absorb impact energy at berthing and keep proper stand-off distance between two ships. Two small-size pneumatic fenders (secondary fenders) are hung high on the hull at both bow and stern of smaller ship to prevent contact from rolling of ships due to swell and wind. "STS Transfer Guide", published by the International Chamber of Shipping (OCIMF), is a good reference for further information.
Test and Inspection for Commercial Floating Pneumatic Rubber Fenders
Acceptance testing and inspection for purchased Pneumatic Rubber Fenders shall be based on the tests and inspections indicated below:
● Material test of rubber — Conducted in accordance with the Physical properties of inner and outer rubber required by ISO 17357:2002
● Dimensional inspection — shall be inspected at the initial internal pressure. Tolerance: +10%, -5%.
● Air-leakage test — shall be conducted at initial pressure for more than 30 min
● Hydrostatic-pressure test — shall be performed for 10 min at the hydrostatic pressure shown in “test pressure at 0% deflection”. Maximum temporary elongation: 10%
